ABOUT GPS AND NAVIGATION

What does GPS stand for?

  • The abbreviation GPS stands for "Global Positioning System"

How does GPS work?

  • There are several satellites that orbit the globe. These satellites are constantly beaming down information to the earth. The Nokia 6110 Navigator comes with a built in GPS receiver. The GPS receiver in the phone uses this information from a group of these satellites to determine the location of the phone on earth.

What is the difference between GPS and Navigation?

  • GPS tells us where we are at that particular point in time. Navigation uses GPS to tell us how to get from one place to another. Navigation gives us turn by turn voice guidance to help us get to where we want to go.

What is A-GPS? How does it work? How much does it cost?

  • Assisted GPS (A-GPS) is a method to improve the usability of GPS. It enables the phone to obtain the satellite fix faster and more reliably. This results in faster positioning and hence significantly improved user experience. Assisted GPS requires an active GPRS connection in order to function.
  • It works by sending a small amount of data using GPRS. This data helps providing GPS satellite information to the handset via the cellular network.
  • Every time, navigation is started on the phone a small amount of data (a few KB depending on operators) is sent. Also, when the navigation is on, there is a small amount of data that is transfer using GPRS. The cost of this data is operator dependent.

Does GPS and Navigation need GPRS to work?

  • Navigation does not need GPRS to work. Infact, navigation on the Nokia 6110 Navigator will even work without a SIM card. However, the Nokia 6110 Navigator comes with A-GPS (Assisted GPS). This feature requires GPRS. However, if one wants, this feature can be turned off by the user.

How much does it cost to use Navigation?

  • Navigation on the Nokia 6110 Navigator comes activated free. The cost of the Navigation license is included in the cost of the phone.
  • The usage of Navigation and GPS is also free. The only charge that one has to pay is for the small amount of data usage that happens on GPRS due to the A-GPS feature.

How much time does it take for the phone to tell me where I am?

  • When the navigation feature is switched on for the first time, it would take a few minutes for the GPS to tell you where you are.
  • However, using A-GPS, this time can be reduced to less than a minute.
  • When people switch on GPS after moving from one city to another, it may also take a few minutes to get the first GPS fix.
  • If the Navigation is not used for a long period of time or if the phone is switched off for a long period of time, it will take longer to start.

Does GPS and Navigation work Indoors?

  • Since GPS uses information from satellites that orbit the earth, it does not work indoors. It requires a view of the sky in order to work.
  • If the future, if the mobile operators offer A-GPS through their network, it will be possible to get GPS to work indoors.
  • Navigation also does not work indoors. However, using a feature called "Trips" and "Simulate the Trip", one can plan a trip and see the route and directions sitting indoors.

If there are 2 ways to reach a location, which one is selected by the phone?

  • One has the option in the phone menu to select "As Fast As Possible" or "As Short As Possible" route. Depending on the selection made, the route is selected
  • "As fast as possible" will use the highway and "As short as possible" will use the shortest route.

If I type in an address, will the Navigation on the phone take me there?

  • If the address has been mapped, then the phone will navigate you to that place. However, if the place is not mapped, then it is recommended to search for a famous location or landmark, close to the place where one wants to go. Once this has been found on the map, one can navigate to that location and then search the address from there on.

What is a landmark? How many landmarks can I save on my phone?

  • Since not all places can be mapped, the phone allows one to save locations which are important to them and save them as landmarks.
  • All one has to do is to stand at that place with the GPS on, and save the location as a "landmark"
  • Users can create as many landmarks as possible like "Home", "Office", "Factory", "Clients Office" etc

Can one take phone calls while the Navigation is giving directions?

  • Yes, one can take phone calls while the Navigation is on.
  • One can mute the navigation directions audio (shortcut is to press number "9") and take the call.
  • If the Navigation is not put on mute, it will continue giving directions in the background when you are on the phone. Only the user can hear the directions. The person on the other side will only hear the users' voice and not the navigation instructions.

Can other features of the phone also be used when the Navigation is on?

  • Yes, other key features of the phone can be used while the Navigation is on.

Is the GPS device always connected?

  • When switched on, the GPS receiver is always receiving data from the satellites. The Nokia 6110 Navigator uses GPRS for the first few seconds while connecting using A-GPS
